On June 27, 2007, shortly before 11:00 p.m., CBP officers at the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge referred a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am, driven by a 32-year-old male U.S. citizen from Laredo, Texas, for a secondary examination. During the examination, CBP officers noted discrepancies with three cases of Mexican beer that were in the trunk. The vehicle was referred for further examination utilizing a non-intrusive imaging system that revealed an anomaly within the trunk of the vehicle where the cases of beer were being carried. Upon further examination of the beer cases, it was noted that all three cases of beer had been previously opened. CBP officers then discovered that the liquid contained within the beer bottles tested positive for methamphetamine. CBP officers seized the three cases of beer.
The beer will be sent to a CBP laboratory for processing and determination of the exact amount of methamphetamine that is contained within the liquid of the 36 bottles that measure 33.84 liters. CBP officers seized the three cases of beer containing the liquid methamphetamine, the vehicle, and assessed the driver a monetary penalty. No immediate arrests were made, but U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents are continuing their investigation.
"CBP officers are determined and committed to our mission of detecting any form of illegal introduction of any substances, and this enforcement action is a testament to that endeavor," said Gene Garza, CBP Port Director, Laredo. |
